Crissy very much wanted to breastfeed her baby but she was unsuccessful. With a different support system, perhaps a pediatrician or Lactation Consultant who noticed the baby's tight frenulum, things may have gone differently. Mothers who hope to breastfeed but find it ultimately impossible feel very sad and confused about their failure. We mothers, who strongly believe that breastfeeding is best should not compound the grief these women suffer by judging them. It is the job of all childbirth professionals (and humane mothers and fathers) to accept and support the bottle feeding mothers and to realize that breastfeeding is not a barometer of love.
If Crissy has another baby, I hope she will be successful in her attempts to breastfeed and that she will not suffer guilt for her inability to Breastfeed Evan.
Maybe a skilled postpartum doula will be available to help encourage her through the early feedings when the baby is learning to latch.
